Propyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC) is a non-ionic cellulose ether made from natural polymer material cellulose through a series of chemical processing. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) is an odorless, tasteless, non-toxic white powder that can be dissolved in cold water to form a transparent viscous solution. It has the properties of thickening, adhesion, dispersion, emulsification, film formation, suspension, adsorption, gelation, surface activity, moisture retention and protective colloid.


2. What is the main purpose of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)?


HPMC is widely used in construction materials, coatings, synthetic resins, ceramics, medicine, food, textiles, agriculture, cosmetics, tobacco and other industries. HPMC can be divided into construction grade, food grade and medical grade according to its purpose. At present, most domestic products are of construction grade. In construction grade, putty powder is used in a large amount, about 90% is used for putty powder, and the rest is used for cement mortar and glue.

1. )Masonry mortar and plastering mortar


High water retention can fully hydrate the cement. Significantly increase the bond strength. At the same time, it can appropriately improve the tensile strength and shear strength. Greatly improve the construction effect and increase work efficiency.


2. )Water resistant putty


The main function of cellulose ether in putty is water retention, adhesion and lubrication, to avoid excessive loss of water causing cracks or powder removal, and at the same time increase the adhesion of the putty, reduce the sagging phenomenon during construction, and make the construction smoother. Effortless.


3. )Interface agent


Mainly used as a thickener, it can improve the tensile strength and shear strength, improve the surface coating, and enhance the adhesion and bonding strength.


4. )External thermal insulation mortar


Cellulose ether plays a key role in bonding and increasing strength in this material, making the mortar easier to coat, improving work efficiency, and having anti-hanging ability. The higher water retention performance can extend the working time of the mortar and improve the anti-shrinkage and Crack resistance, improve surface quality, and increase bonding strength.


5) Tile adhesive


The high water retention eliminates the need to pre-soak or wet the tiles and substrates, which can significantly improve the bonding strength. The slurry can be constructed in a long period of time, delicate, uniform, easy to construct, and has good anti-slip properties.


6. )Caulking agent


The addition of cellulose ether makes it have good edge adhesion, low shrinkage and high abrasion resistance, protects the base material from mechanical damage, and avoids the negative impact of water penetration on the entire building.


7. )Self-leveling material


The stable viscosity of cellulose ether ensures good fluidity and self-leveling ability, and controls the water retention rate to enable rapid solidification and reduce cracking and shrinkage.
